The
Photo League was the only significant independent organisation of
photographers in the United States to deal with social photography.
From its birth in 1936 to its disbandment in 1951 due to
the McCarthyite
persecution, the League developed its own work by producing books,
exhibitions, lectures and conferences but above all by involving
numerous professional and amateur photographers in organised projects,
the “Feature Groups”, to record life in the working-class quarters.
All the most important photographers of the day took part in its
projects. The photographers’ empathy with the working classes enabled
them to capture the atmosphere and vitality of life in downtown New
York in the 30’s and 40’s.
